Allergy: Silent War With No Winners
Many people think wars are stupid. They are, indeed. What they don’t know is that there are civil wars talking place in their body every day. The immune system is the army our body uses to defeat enemies such as germs, bacteria, viruses, or any other foreign matters that invade our integrity. Allergy sufferers have to endure one additional battle: the struggle on the immune system to annihilate substances which are in fact harmless, but which are mistakenly considered as being potential threats to the human being. Such substances, like pollens from trees and flowers, molds, mildew, dust mites, foods or even cold, are generically called allergens, when they are responsible for triggering an allergic reaction in the body of a person which suffers from allergy.
Weapons Used In The Allergy War
The human body uses an army of cells called antibodies, which start to secret a substance called histamine, with the role of neutralizing the so-called enemies, which can be anything from peanuts, to cow’s milk, or to airborne allergens such as pollens, dust mites, pet dander. These are present everywhere, even in those luxury condos you see in real estate agents advertisements.
Fact is that allergy is an incurable disease, and it gets worse with time and with frequent exposures to the allergens. Anti-allergic medication has the sole purpose of alleviating symptoms like sore throat, running nose, red and itchy eyes, skin rashes or swelling. It doesn’t cure the allergy itself, so the best prevention method is to stay away from the allergens, once you’ve been tested and you know what are those things your body gives this abnormal, allergic reaction to.
